We’ve (KT) got some 90,000 new iPhone subscribers, including 53,000 pre-orders after KT officially began local sales of the smartphone on Nov. 28. Although KT is receiving more from China,we need more!

The unprecedented demand for iPhone in Korea has surprised many technology pundits and has jolted regional powerhouses Samsung and LG. Samsung has launched a Nixonian (think dirty tricks) campaign to undermine iPhone’s success in Korea. This anti-iPhone effort is being held up to some ridicule in Korea and may actually backfire. In a brief press release Friday, Apple announced its countersuit as a “response” to Nokia’s own legal action.

“Other companies must compete with us by inventing their own technologies, not just by stealing ours,” said Bruce Sewell, Apple’s General Counsel and senior vice president.

If true, it may be the iPhone bound for another carrier in the US.

While the six-figure sales in China suggest demand for the device has grown since its launch, some still believe it’s not enough. One analyst noted that an additional 100,000 iPhone users among China Unicom’s 144 million wireless subscribers will not make a huge difference for the company.

But part of China Unicom’s strategy is bolstering its brand-new 3G network, which launched alongside the introduction of the iPhone. The company stated it hoped to add over 1 million 3G users every month, and it reached that goal in October.

China Unicom is also a beneficiary of China’s broad gray market, where many unlocked, no-contract iPhones are believed to be purchased at prices cheaper than what the wireless carrier offers. At the moment, those users are most likely to use their handset on China Unicom, which is the only network that supports the phone’s 3G capability.

In November, China Unicom executives revealed that the iPhone had sold just 5,000 units in its first four days. Analysts believe the device was held back by its lack of Wi-Fi — excluded because of a temporary ban on the technology by the Chinese government — and the availability of devices on the gray market. Still, officials with China’s second-largest wireless provider have high hopes for the iPhone, predicting that 10 percent of their 3G customers will use Apple’s smartphone in the next three years.

There will otherwise be a CMMB mobile TV tuner and access to a China Mobile-approved app store. Despite the announcement, LG hasn’t released a price for the LG Amundsen, though the smartphone is expected to come to China Mobile before the end of November. RIM is coming into a market where may cellphones are not marketed through the major carriers. There are millions of unlocked iPhones in China. They work on most carriers systems in the world’s most populous nations. But RIM’s handset often requires that customers have their ownRIM e-mail servers. It is not clear whether unlocked BlackBerries will interact with RIM server hardware if the handsets are incorrectly configured.

Update: July 28, 2009 - China Unicom has denied that a deal has been finalized and Apple, per standard modus operandi, declined to comment.

According to China Unicom spokesperson Sophia Tso:“Discussions are still ongoing, we have not reached any formal agreement.” A second China Unicom spokesperson suggested that a deal timeframe exists but talks continue:

“Both sides have their own timeframe for an agreement but essentially it depends on the practical progress of the negotiations.”

July 27, 2009 – File this under rumor … China website Tech.QQ has posted a story today about China Unicom’s plans to bring iPhone to China. The report quotes anonymous “informed sources” who claim that Apple and China Unicom have finalized their deal to officially launch iPhone in China. The report does not mention when China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) might grant Apple’s iPhone the required Network Access License (NAL). However, the Tech.QQ source states that iPhone will be launched by the end of September 2009.

Key takeaways from the Tech.QQ report:

• The Apple and China Unicom deal will be a 3-year exclusive.*
• The iPhone will be customized for the China market (e.g. Chinese language and preloaded with “for China” apps).
• China Unicom will pay Apple 3,000 CNY ($439 USD) per unit.
• China Unicom will subsidize iPhone by pricing the iPhone below the 3,000 CNY paid to Apple. This would take the official iPhone price below the grey-market price for smuggled iPhones.
• China Unicom has promised to sell a minimum 1 million units per year with significantly higher sales targets.
